About Transition Ranch

The name Transition Ranch carries three meanings.

First, it reflects the personal transition of owners Sandy and Leslee Hurwitz, who moved from urban veterinary medicine into rural ranching, restoration, and land stewardship.

Second, it describes the land itself. The ranch sits in a true ecological transition zone where four major regions meet, overlap, and create a uniquely diverse habitat.

Third, it speaks to the guest experience. Visitors arrive as observers, but often leave changed by what they have seen, learned, and felt on the land.

Dr. Sandy & Leslee Hurwitz

Dr. Sandy Hurwitz is a dedicated veterinarian with more than 45 years of experience practicing veterinary medicine and owning clinics throughout Texas. An avid nature and wildlife photographer, lifelong learner, and perpetual student of the land, Sandy brings a rare blend of scientific curiosity, quiet wisdom, and deep respect for animals and habitat to every part of the ranch experience.

Leslee Hurwitz has partnered with Sandy in their clinics as a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager since the early 2000s. With a passion for Peruvian Paso horses, meaningful relationships and cultivating strong, thoughtful cultures, Leslee brings warmth, grace, and unmistakable Texas hospitality to Transition Ranch.

Together, Sandy and Leslee have also worked in real estate investment and development, a path that eventually led them to acquire the land that, through years of restoration and improvement, became Transition Ranch.

Today, they live on the ranch with three dogs, five horses, and one salty cat. Their life here reflects the same spirit they share with guests: care for the land, respect for wildlife, curiosity about the natural world, and a belief that time spent in a place like this can leave a person changed.
